Hooray for Councilmember Cheh!

[1]The Energizer Bunny can’t compete with Sandra Fusco-Walker, AANMA’s Director of Patient Advocacy. She never stops! For those of you following the story, Sandra’s been working on changing state laws to allow students with asthma and anaphylaxis to carry and self-administer their prescribed lifesaving medications, since before President George W. Bush signed the ASTHMA Act of 2004. [2]

And she’s nearing the finish line! This month, South Dakota is expected to introduce their legislation and become the 50th state to have laws protecting students with asthma, and it’ll be the 45th  state with laws protecting students with anaphylaxis! What a great way to start out the new decade and to celebrate AANMA’s 25th anniversary (November 13 — only 11 months away!).

Sandra sent me a copy of the “Healthy Schools Act of 2009” presented by Washington, D.C. Councilmember Mary M. Cheh (Ward 3) that quite frankly is boldly refreshing, practical and a model for all states to adopt! Visit her website [3] to view the bill and the legislative memo. Sandra’s been working with D.C. council members and the D.C. Asthma Coalition over the years on a variety of asthma and allergy management issues, but what we love about this proposed legislation is its simplicity and common-sense approach, its readability and novel solutions addressing not only asthma and allergy, but also nutrition and exercise.

This legislation is a “practice what we preach” guide to raising healthy students. Check it out — and share it with your children, too. Ask them what they think about the details. There’s no mumbo jumbo to sort through, and it’s a great opportunity to show your children how the legislative process works and what it means to be an American. Who knows — they may get so excited that they’ll want to get involved and help introduce a bill just like it in your state!
