School Nurses: Are your students Fit to Breathe?

On June 30, 2010 @ 3:43 pm In All Articles

Every teacher and coach has students who’ve been diagnosed with asthma in their classroom or gymnasium, but many don’t know that asthma is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition. Understandably, students with asthma often resist activities they think will make it hard for them to breathe or those they figure will cause failure or embarrassment in front of classmates, including exercise. They often adopt sedentary lifestyles and hobbies. Some become overweight – a dangerous condition for people with asthma of all ages.

Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) is making it our mission to help people with asthma safely get and stay in shape. For starters, this year at the National Associaton of School Nurses (NASN) conference we’re conducting Fit to Breathe: Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm (EIB) express seminars featuring allergist Michael Foggs, MD and sports nutritionist Lisa Dorfman. Our goal: Equip school nurses with tools to help them better understand and motivate their students with asthma.

We’ve also posted resources in a new “Exercise & Asthma [1]” section of our website. Here you’ll find articles, easy-to-follow .pdf print-outs that cover asthma basics, an Asthma Action Plan and more. These materials were developed for the NASN seminars with support from Teva Respiratory [2].

Also, check www.GreatAmericanAsthmaChallenge.org [3] for Challenge activities labeled “*Schools Challenge*.” (School nurses: Register as a “healthcare provider” so these Challenges show up on your user dashboard.)
