On Your Mark! Get Set! Shape Up and Show Up!

On October 4, 2012 @ 10:48 am In All Articles

The Big Day is almost here. As the sun rises over the Potomac River on Sunday, October 28, 2012 — after more than six months of physical conditioning and hundreds of miles of training runs — the 28 members of Team AANMA [1] will join 30,000 runners at the starting line for the Marine Corps Marathon [2].

Most of the Team AANMA runners have asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) [3] or allergies themselves or in their families. Each has committed to raise awareness and money in support of Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) education, outreach and advocacy programs. Click here to meet them and see training videos! [1]

Share the excitement of race day with us and support the team in person.

  • Come to AANMA’s booth at the marathon sign-in Health and Fitness Expo [1] on Friday or Saturday for FREE spirometry and exhaled nitric oxide [4]asthma tests. Meet members of Team AANMA as they sign in for their marathon numbers.
  • Print out this flyer [5] and tack it up on bulletin boards in coffee shops and running stores
  • Bring signs and join our Race Day cheering section (click here for a map [6]).
  • Follow us on Twitterhttp://twitter.com/aanma [7] — for minute-by-minute race updates on Sunday.
  • Support [8] Team AANMA’s fundraising efforts with a special donation.

AANMA Marathon Race Coordinator Larry Evans is on Team AANMA, running his second marathon. Some of his thoughts as he trains:

Every runner on Team AANMA knows how important it is to shape up before you show up.  It’s about the journey. For us, there is no finish line. Running the Marine Corps Marathon is something we do because we want to.

Not all of us have asthma or EIB, but we know that running with asthma is not something you do without a strategic plan.  Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) [3] is as much a part of the equation as the terrain and the shoes we wear. Running with asthma is not something you do without a strategic plan. Know your body. Consult with your primary care and specialty physicians.

Add these healthy habits to your daily regimen and pick up the pace with Team AANMA today: walking; bending; stretching; climbing stairs; easy jogging; swimming; deep breathing; making the right food choices and getting plenty of sleep. By race day, you may be ready to try some more strenuous routines, but check with your doctor first and get congratulated on your new healthy lifestyle!
