Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA)

Illinois

Illinois has an act in place for using epinephrine in emergency situations.

Illinois:  PA 97-0361, Emergency Epinephrine Act
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/documents/010500050K22-30.htm

Congratulations!  Your state has passed stock-epinephrine laws or regulations that permit an emergency supply of epinephrine auto-injectors to be used in a school. However, our job is not done yet. Each law or regulation must be implemented or put into action by a board or an agency.

The agency or board will then issue administrative rules, guidelines or best practices explaining in detail how it intends to put the law into effect and what a mother, father, caregiver, physician, pharmacist or school nurse must do to comply with the law. AANMA is an active resource in these states assisting administrators in a seamless rollout of the stock-epinephrine laws.

In 2013, Dr. Bajowala taped an Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology video to teach viewers about the significance of food allergy bullying in the school setting.

In February 2013, Dr. Chou and Dr. Murthy provided an ACE presentation to health care professionals in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Siri delivered a presentation to the Springfield Public School Board in Springfield, IL to educate members about anaphylaxis and advocate for a stock epinephrine policy. Dr. Siri continued to lobby the school board to advocate for the issue and enlisted the help of the Illinois Attorney General as well as local alderman and local media to draw attention to the it.  In December 2012/January 2013, the school board passed a stock epinephrine school policy for Springfield Public Schools, a district with 30-40 schools and approximately 15,000 students.
