Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA)

Kansas has an act in place for using epinephrine in emergency situations.

An act concerning epinephrine; relating to the administration thereof; authorizing the maintenance of epinephrine kits.

Congratulations!  Your state has passed stock-epinephrine laws or regulations that permit an emergency supply of epinephrine auto-injectors to be used in a school. However, our job is not done yet. Each law or regulation must be implemented or put into action by a board or an agency.

The agency or board will then issue administrative rules, guidelines or best practices explaining in detail how it intends to put the law into effect and what a mother, father, caregiver, physician, pharmacist or school nurse must do to comply with the law. AANMA is an active resource in these states assisting administrators in a seamless rollout of the stock-epinephrine laws.

ACE Team:

Kam McEwen, RN of Hutchinson High School
Hutchinson, KS

Jeff Wald, MD of Kansas City Allergy & Asthma Associates, P.A.
Overland Park, KS

Roxana Voica, MD, of Topeka Allergy and Asthma Clinic
Topeka, KS

Sample ACE Team Activity:

Ms. McEwen revised Hutchinson High School’s enrollment form to include more information about anaphylaxis and allergies, which helped identify 14 new students at risk for anaphylaxis.  She then held one-on-one training sessions with each at-risk student, assessed his or her anaphylaxis knowledge and facilitated a practice session using an epinephrine auto-injector.

On March 29, 2013, Dr. Wald’s practice, Kansas City Allergy and Asthma Associates, shared a story about egg allergies, just in time for Easter: Eggs are not only a common baking ingredient, but a food that is in several Easter dishes. While eggs can be difficult to substitute, there are some replacements sold in stores. Some even say mashed avocado, moistened bread crumbs and rolled oats can work in recipes.
