And while pollen and outdoor air pollution get most of the attention, Environmental Protection Agency – or EPA – studies show that pollutant levels inside homes and buildings are two to five times higher than outside! And since Americans spend up to 90 percent of their time indoors, that puts clean indoor air at the top of everyone’s must-have list. If you have asthma and allergies, it means even more. The National Institutes of Health National Asthma Education and Prevention Program recently updated the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma and highlighted <a href="http://www.aanma.org/2009/04/the-new-asthma-guidelines-setting-priorities-for-asthma-care/">six priority recommendations</a> for treating asthma. One of these was to develop a strategy to reduce a patient’s exposure to allergens and irritants that make that person’s asthma worse, either by increasing inflammation in the lungs or setting off episodes of coughing and wheezing. Y mientras el polen y la contaminación exterior se llevan toda la atención, estudios realizados por la Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA, por sus siglas en inglés), indican que el nivel de contaminación al interior de hogares y edificios es dos a tres veces más alto que el de espacios abiertos. Cuando pensamos que cerca de 23 millones de personas padecen de asma en Estados Unidos y que cerca del 70 por ciento de ellas va a desencadenar síntomas debido a alérgenos encontrados principalmente al interior de sus casas, oficinas, o lugares de estudios, saber cuáles son estos causantes, cómo prevenirlos y cómo eliminarlos, es fundamental. Actualmente AANMA cuenta con el apoyo de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA, por sus siglas en inglés) para educar a la población sobre la importancia de tener una buena calidad del aire en los espacios cerrados y de esa forma prevenir y manejar los síntomas de alergia y asma.
